Humane Solutions for a Gopher-Free Yard

 In Pest Prevention

Gophers may be industrious creatures, but they are an unwelcome presence in your yard. A single gopher can destroy your lawn overnight as they emerge from their tunnels. As a caring homeowner who values the delicate balance of nature, it’s only natural to seek methods of gopher removal that not only bid farewell to these tunneling troublemakers but also align with our respect for all living beings. A gopher in your yard does not mean you must reach for toxic baits or inhumane traps; at New Mexico Pest Control, we pride ourselves on offering non-toxic, humane wildlife pest control services.

Humane Methods of Gopher Removal

Removing gophers from your yard in a human manner is important for many homeowners. Below are the most common humane methods of gopher control:

  • Live Traps – Live traps are designed to capture gophers alive. A piece of bait, usually apples, carrots, or peanut butter, is placed inside the trap. When a gopher enters the trap to take the bait, the door mechanism triggers, closing off the entrance and trapping the gopher inside until you can retrieve and relocate it.
  • Ultrasonic Repellants – Sonic gopher repellants are innovative devices that emit a series of low-frequency sonic pulses that travel through the soil. The ultrasonic waves are unpleasant for gophers, deterring them from entering the affected area.
  • Barriers – Installing barriers around your yard is one of the best ways to prevent gophers. Since gophers only tunnel approximately eighteen inches under the ground, burying your fence two feet below the surface can stop gophers from invading your yard. You can also create a barrier by digging a six-inch by twenty-four-inch trench around the perimeter of your property. Fill the trench with large rocks or line it with gopher mesh to create an impenetrable blockade.
  • Gopher Mesh – Gopher mesh is a barrier laid on top of the soil that allows grass and plants to grow through but stops gophers from tunneling to the surface. While the mesh prevents gophers from creating gopher hills, it does not stop them from damaging plants from below.
